Today we will travel to the Bolata Nature Reserve which is the only reserve in Bulgaria that includes both an aquatory and a coastal area. Kingfishers, bittern, herons, grebes and ducks can be seen here since Via Pontica - one of the main routes for migratory birds passes through this area. The Bolata Reserve also features a little bay with the only sandy beach North from Cape Kaliakra. The bay is picturesquely surrounded on both sides with red rocks that contain numerous caves, in which remains of an ancient settlement and evidence of life from 400 BC are discovered. Today we start kayaking from the bay in the Bolata Reserve and paddle along the rocky capr dropping dramatically into the sea. As a strategic vantage point over the Black Sea, the cape has seen a long history of fortifications and has been the inspiration for countless myths and legends. Throughout most of the year, from the official lookouts along cape Kalikara you can observe some increasingly rare dolphins and migrating bird species.
