Traditionally, the Thracian valley is one of the most renowned wine producing areas in Bulgaria, since it provides perfect conditions for some of the best wine grape sorts to grow. Learning about the ancient traditions in winemaking preserved in the selection of wine cellars that we will visit on the trip, will provide a powerful insight of Bulgaria’s culture and mentality, in which wine making has always been an essential part.

The Bulgarian ancestors – the Thracians, held great respect for wine. They used it for their religious rituals because they believed it would bring them closer to their gods. Day - by - day Itinerary:

Day 1: Welcome to Bulgaria!
Upon arrival at Sofia Airport you will be welcomed by our Italian speaking guide who will escort you during the trip. Depending on the time of your arrival we will have lunch in a restaurant close to the airport. Then our trip will continue to Plovdiv. We will enjoy a welcome drink in the lobby bar of the hotel after we check in. For dinner we will have a rich variety of local dishes washed down with a selection of red wines from the Thracian valley in a nice restaurant in the Old Town of Plovdiv.

Day 2: Plovdiv - Winery nearby Plovdiv - Plovdiv
Today we will visit one of the best wineries in South Bulgaria and we will have time to take in the romantic spirit of Plovdiv. After breakfast we will stroll in the cobblestoned alleyways of the Old Town “Trimontium” which is among the most magnificent places in Bulgaria and is famous for its spectacular Roman Theatre, the multitude of tiny art galleries, churches and authentic cobbled streets lined with Revival period houses. A true journey through the centuries!
On our agenda this afternoon is a visit of the wine cellar nearby Plovdiv, where we will sample red and white wines from the South-Bulgarian Region accompanied by mouth-watering appetizers. In the late afternoon we will return to Plovdiv.

Day 3: Plovdiv - Alexandrovo Tomb – Haskovo – Wine cellar nearby the village of Popovitsa – Plovdiv
Our program today will start with a trip to village of Alexandrovo. We will visit the Alexandrovo Thracian Tomb which contains priceless and unique frescoes, the bright colours of which have been stunningly preserved for almost 2,500 years. The images are significant not only for their artistic merit, but also because they reveal new information on styles of clothing, weaponry, social systems, and religious beliefs of the people who lived in Thrace shortly before the conquest of the territory by Alexander the Great and his father Phillip.
For lunch we will make a stop in the town of Haskovo. Here we will be able to take some photos of the highest statue of the Madonna and Child in the world. The unique monument is 14 meters high, and stands on a 17-meter pedestal.
Our last stop on the way back to Plovdiv will be a wine cellar nearby the village of Popovitsa. We will taste the wine sorts of the region and the unique for Bulgaria wine White Mavrud, made from the local red grape Mavrud. We will also enjoy a tour around the winery and learn about the whole process of the wine making from the wine expert.
In the late afternoon we will return to Plovdiv.

Day 4: PlovdivBachkovo Monastery - Brestovitsa – Sofia
Our first visit today will be the Bachkovo Monastery- one of the most impressive sanctuaries within the territory of the country. The talent of the skilful icon painters is reflected in the beauty of the masterpieces on the walls and the intricate iconostasis of the monastery church.
Today we will have our last wine tasting for the tour at the winery located in the village of Brestovitsa. During the tour around the winery we will learn more about the history and the ways of production of the local wines from the Thracian valley. After the tour we will enjoy a wine tasting in an impressive wine tasting hall situated 8 meters under ground level.   In the afternoon we will travel to Sofia where we will spend the last night from the trip.
The afternoon will be dedicated to the Bulgarian capital. Our sightseeing tour and walk in the centre of the city will reaveal to us Sofia’s true vibrant character. We will visit the Banya Bashi Mosque, the recently restored synagogue, the Old Catholic church, Aleksander Nevski cathedral. We cannot miss the Church of "St Sofia” that has given the capital its name in 14th century. We will also explore the ruins of the Roman fortress “Serdika” and Martyr Saint George Conqueror Church Rotonda. Of course we pass by the National Theatre, the Banya Bashi Mosque – a remnant of the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria that lasted nearly five centuries. The mosque derives its name from the phrase Banya Bashi, which means “many baths”.

Day 5: Sofia – transfer to the airport
Today we are leaving great memories and memorable landscapes saying “Goodbye” to Bulgaria!
Depending on the flight schedule we can advise other activities according to the client`s wishes.
